 A research grant announced Tuesday will allow seismologists to take the first steps toward an early warning system for earthquakes in the Northwest. An operational system is still a long way off, but it could eventually resemble the computerized warnings pioneered in Japan.  The $2 million grant from the Moore Foundation to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network is part of a $6 million grant shared by the University of California Berkeley, Caltech, and the USGS.


With support of CREW members, WSSPC has just completed and released a report in support of the accomplishments of the state tsunami programs and he important role they play in educating the public, especially for preparedness for a locally generated tsunami. On September 22, 2011, FEMA FEMA released the final National Recovery Framework.


KQED and KTCS produced a new program about megathrust earthquakes and the threat to the Cascadia Region. The program first airs in the Bay Area on  Wed Sep 21 at 7:30pm, on KQED 9. The program is also available on line at: megathrust earthquakes.  


Two new federally-funded studies say vertical evacuation structures could save thousands of Washington coastal residents from deadly tsunami waves.
