CREW Spring Quarterly Meeting Minutes

10:00 AM Business Meeting:

Bob Zimmerman called the meeting to order. A quorum was present.

1. Approval of Minutes:
In Stacy Bartoletti's absence, Bob Zimmerman presented minutes of the January 21, 2004 meeting. Joan Scofield moved and Ines Pearce seconded that the minutes be approved. Motion approved.

2. Financial Report:
Tim Walsh's presented the financial report.

CREW Financial Statement, First Quarter 2004:

3. Project Team Reports:

a. Small Business/Homeowners (Ines Pearce and Steve Ludeman)
Steve reported that not much progress has been made with the web site and efforts are being made to update the website. Much has been accomplished with the Disaster Resistant Business Initiative

b. Emergency Management Organizations (Mazurkiewicz and Ellsworth)

No Update. Fred said that he been having trouble connecting with Claudia, but will have suggestions prepared for the coming meeting.

c. Scenario Development (Frietag)

The Cascadia risk document being prepared by Lu Clark and the EERI sponsored Seattle Fault Scenario project was introduced, but discussion was held in the afternoon (Bartoletti). Bob Freitag presented a brief slideshow of pictures taken during the CREW/EERI round table exercise on 04/05/04 and discussed some of the outcomes noting that priority concerns by the business community were for personal safety for staff and customers and the ability to navigate surface streets. A final draft will be send to the membership within the month..

d. Crew Business Plan (Bob Zimmerman)

Bob Zimmerman reported that CREW has prepared its annual report for FEMA. He spoke briefly about how projects are funded and the overall functions of the budget. The CREW budget is dependant on FEMA and DHS for the $75,000 given annually. The only activity that has produced revenue for CREW has been conferences. A discussion ensued about hosting a future conference. Craig Weaver stated that during several recent USGS conferences, views were expressed for the need one deal with specific risks facing the Cascadia region. Bob Zimmerman agreed that the idea should be pursued. Joan Scofield suggests that this should be the topic of the next meeting.

e. Regional Coordination Project (Freitag)

Bob Freitag spoke of continued involvement with EPICC in support of their effort to prepare for Vancouver's coming Olympic games. This event could provide an opportunity for strengthening our cross boarder partnership and address a need that is not being realized by us Yanks.

f. Speaker Bureau (Freitag and Steel)

Bob Freitag and Bill Steel have been involved in giving presentations.

g. National Earthquake Conference (Zimmerman, Weaver)

The National Earthquake Conference will be held on September 27 to 29, 2004 in St. Lois. Craig Weaver spoke of the effort being undertaken to engage the private sector. Global Net Productions is preparing a video for the conference. CREW's Business Survival Tool Kit will be included in a set being given to each attendee.

h. Web Site (Elman and Amiri)

No Update


i. Videos (Freitag)

Bob Freitag expresses the need for volunteers to help with sales and marketing of the videos packages. At the current price the videos are not selling, Bob thinks a new approach needs to be undertaken. Tim Walsh suggests placing them in academic media catalogs for distribution to schools. Lou Clark suggests clips should be sent to the business media community for promotion. Bob would like to send free copies to neighborhood planning comities and chambers of commerce.

It was suggested that Bob ask CREW members for ideas and possible create a marketing committee.


j. Quarterly Program Activities (Scofield)

The use or lack of use of Internet forums was discussed and Zimmerman stated the process was still not streamlined enough. Bob Zimmerman and Bob Freitag will work with Ella Elman in streamlining the process

4. New Business:

CREW will continue to consider ways to support EPICC with the coming Olympics. CREW will consider creating a working group to lend support, increase our preparedness and take advantage of the opportunity. The possibility of holding workshops between Seattle and BC will be an topic discussed at out next meeting..

The next CREW Quarterly meeting will be held in Oregon at Newport Marine Center on July 22nd, 2004 as a first priority or on July 26th if the 22nd does not work. Elections will take place at the July meeting. Active board members will be contacted regarding re-nomination.

Afternoon Program:

  • Report on seismic risks facing the Cascadia Region (Lou Clark and Linda Noson)

    The draft document and results of HAZUS runs were present and comments were received.

  • Seattle Fault Scenario (Weaver and Bartoletti)

Greig Weaver gave slideshow on ground motions for the Seattle Fault which included HAZUS run.
Stacy Bartoletti continue the discussion with a slideshow illustrating the expect impact of an earthquake on the Seattle Fault.

  • The report on the concerns of the Washington and Oregon Land Use Planning community was distributed by Bob Freitag.
  • Disaster Resistant Business Initiative (Pearce)
Ines Pearce spoke to the progress being made by the Disaster Resistant Business initiative and that CREW was helping fund the development and distribution of products being produced.
